Can You Name That Classic Shotgun?

Clue: Check out the underside.

Dave Birchard of Cambridge, Pennsylvania, still has this gun his late father Claire used here in 1968 in Pennsylvania. Dave wrote that his father sure would have enjoyed PF and our magazine – you can too by joining PF! Dave said he was never able to hunt with his dad, but that every time he uses the gun “the memories of dad come flooding back.”

Hint: I notice a telling looking magazine bolt, corn cob forearm and bottom eject! We’ll post the answer Monday. Good luck.

Answer:

The gun is an Ithaca 37 Featherweight 16 gauge. John Browning and John Pedersen designed the gun in 1937. This pump-action shotgun was made in large numbers for the civilian, military, and police markets. Also known as the Featherlight, it utilizes a novel combination ejection/loading port on the bottom of the gun which leaves the sides closed to the elements. Since shells load and eject from the bottom, operation of the gun is equally convenient for both right and left hand shooters. This makes the gun popular with left-handed shooters.
